About Laura Bailey and her work
Laura has always had a love of rocks, stones and gems. She learned traditional jewelry making in college along with fine arts. She discovered wire wrapped jewelry quite by accident when she was given a labrodorite pendant as a gift. She was intrigued and so set out to learn everything she could about this beautiful form of jewelry making. She did her first piece ten years ago and has never looked back. Several hundred pieces of jewelry and many, many happy customers later, she has decided to bring her artwork to the internet.
Wire jewelry is a four thousand year old art form, bridging many different cultures. Wire wrapping is a solder-less metal working form. The metal wires are held together by wrapping, bending, and twisting them together to form a setting for the stone or gem.
Laura uses Sterling Silver wire and Gold Filled wire to wrap her pieces. Her wrapped pieces include natural stone and gem cabochons, faceted natural and lab created gemstones, glass jewels and cabochons, coins both new and historical, shells, seaglass, cameos, dichroic glass, many different types of gemstone and glass beads, pearls, Swarovski crystals, and precious metal beads and findings. She is always dreaming of or creating her next piece, so you never know what you will find here on her website. |
14 K Gold Fill - Gold Fill is a process of bonding a thin layer of gold to a base metal, with heat and pressure. 14/20 gold fill is 1/20 - 14K by weight. This means that 1/20th of the product is 14K gold. The base metal is brass. 14K gold fill gives the look of 14K at a fraction of the gold cost. Gold fill should not be confused with the micro-thin layers of gold found on gold-plated items. Gold fill is extremely durable and its beauty will last for years and years to come.
Sterling Silver - Sterling silver is the most widely used of the precious metals. Silver is rarely used in its natural state. Like pure gold, its softness makes it an impractical choice for design purposes. Silver is most often alloyed with copper to provide hardness, strength, malleability and a superb ability to assume and retain a fine, high polish. Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.3% copper.
